2 I shall therefore be using the term in a broader way than Hirst does in his well known and influential paper, ‘Liberal education and the nature of knowledge’ and related discussions (Hirst, 1974a, chs 3, 6). Hirst sees liberal education as providing only a part, albeit for him an important part, of the total experience of the child. He claims that in addition to liberal education, but distinct from it, are aspects of education such as specialist education, physical education and the development of moral character. This is because Hirst sees liberal education as the unconstrained development of the mind in rational knowledge. It is concerned solely with crucial (non-instrumental) aspects of the cognitive elements of the achievements of rational autonomous agency, the necessary dispositions and capacities crucial to the child actually functioning as an autonomous person, and the additional knowledge necessary, being supplied from outside it. Hirstian liberal education may provide a necessary basis for these other achievements, but is not itself directly concerned with them. In my view, there are good reasons for rejecting this ‘narrow’ conception of liberal education in favour of a broader one. (See, for example, Bailey, 1984, pp 79–80; White, J, 1982, p 70).
